Today it is time to leave back home. I packed most of my stuff last night, so no hurry. The plane will not leave before after 17:00.
Enough time to sleep in, have a nice late shower and breakfast. Easiest way to get to the airport is by bus and metro. That way I don’t have to connect inside the Loop where there are no elevators for the luggage and a lot of doors to pass.
Of course today is the second day after my arrival day, where the sun is shining. Bad luck. A walk to the bus stop and some stops to the Metro station where I can get a direct connection to O’Hare airport. My flight will leave from Terminal 5. That means that I have to get out of the terminal, take a bus to terminal 5 and to the check in. Terminal 5 is not nice. Very cramped, nearly no places to sit, just a small bistro with bad and overpriced food, some drinks and snacks. I am 1 hour to early for check in, so I have to find a place to sit. The SAS counter is manned to help out stranded people, that where not rebooked. I have to say, even when it was a little bit uncertain what would happen, they did a good job for the customers under the strike.
But let’s check in to Finnair. I am number two in line and the check in is fast. I get a comment, that my luggage is to heavy, but I was supposed to have 32 kg, not Finnair standard. Not a problem. A smile from the staff, a “heavy” sign on the luggage and of I go to the security check. I have to much electronics in my hand luggage. Took some time to get everything back into the trolley. I have access to the KLM/Air France lounge. There are many airlines using this lounge, which doesn’t have all the space in the world. But a nice view over the airfield, champagne and some snacks. Nothing really standing out, but it will do. 🙂 The it is time for boarding.
I got seat 7D in a 2-2-2 layout. A seat at the aisle. Not what I had planes and sure not the plane and service I wanted. But no complains. I got my business class seat and a night of flight ahead of me. A nice champagne before takeoff. The staff is very friendly. I get another passenger to put my GoPro on the window. 🙂 More footage for my flight report.
After takeoff it doesn’t take much time to start dinner service. I have pre-ordered my dinner. Just not taking a chance that they are out of Wagyu beef before they get to the last row. The food was good, but not extraordinary. They made a good cocktail though. 🙂
I am going to sleep. 180 degree beds, a nice blanket, but the pillow is to small. I asked for another one and get one. But it is not the most comfy night. The seat is hard and not enough space at the shoulders. I manage some hours of in and out of sleep. Much to warm here (I am complaining now^^).
Breakfast is not the best. The omelette was very dry. I didn’t eat up in fact. Not often that happens. 🙂
I have 1 hour 50 minutes before my flight to Oslo. Going through passport control fast. I have to check out the lounge. It is a long walk in the wrong direction. Helsinki airport is nice. Clean, modern. The Finnair lounge is nice. Real nordic style, nice food and most important – a shower… That is what I needed. Fresh out of the shower and my tiredness hidden for the rest of the trip a small snack at the lounge before it is boarding time for my flight to Oslo. A small Airbus bit the standard 3-3 configuration. But the middle seat is blocked. Only me and another customer in business class today. Champagne for a start and they even offer a warm meal (!!!) – some meat, potatoes and sauce – for this short hop. And free internet. Very happy about it.
Back in Olso and a looong wait. I still have lounge access, so this is used. It is hard to stay awake and when I felt that I was falling asleep sitting, I got the key for the showers and got another shower. You even can connect you phone to the sound system in the shower. It helped a little bit, but after 6 hours I was happy to get onto my last flight of the day home to Molde. Into the taxi, home and to bed at once. I fell asleep very fast. 🙂
