The night is over at 4 in the morning. I am wide awake. My body tells me that it is 4 in the afternoon. Reading a little bit, trying not to wake anyone. Finally getting up at 7, taking a shower – which is very reviving – an then go out to see the city.

I have booked a Free walking tour of Auckland, which will start at 10 from the harbor. On my way, I find two geocaches. I finally found out how to get the GPS to show walking routes and not air-line distance. Easy finds. As I am missing my luggage I check with a photo shop to get a belt for my camera. But they are a little bit expensive. Has to work until tonight. Walking down the main shopping road towards the ferry building. Meet up at 10 with a larger group.

I try to do free walking tour in all cities i travel to. It is a nice way to get a first overview over the city and the history. From that I can see what is worth doing and what not. This was a nice walk in beautiful weather. The guide did a good job. Some nice places here (especially parks) and there is building activity everywhere. A lot of interesting facts about New Zealand’s history.

Now, I did bring my big camera. What I forgot was to put in a memory card. That is still at the hostel… So I have to get it after the tour. The weather is really nice and warm.

Tour done and as said before, I am off to the hostel, where my luggage has arrived (I checked with the courier). Good to get a change of clothes and the memory card. As the bus drivers are on strike today until 2, I activate my Uber app and get a ride after a minute. 34 kroner is what a bus ride home would cost me. Very acceptable.

And walking back to the city, this time another route, with other geocaches on the route. As I am close to the SkyTower now (the largest tower on the southern hemisphere) I go there and take the tour up to the 60th floor (29 NZ$). Amazing view over the city. Some parts of the floor are made out of glass – I personally would add some sound of braking glass as soon as someone steps on it. 🙂

Back down again and a tour through the city, some parts I went to with the tour in the morning. And I have to stop at the photo shop again – of course something stayed at home… my camera belt. 400 kroner stupidly spent on something I wouldn’t need, but now i do. Much better to handle the camera now.

With all this walking, one needs to take a break. My choice is the Cafe Mojo at the Auckland Art museum. Some nectarine juice and a piece of carrot cake. Very nice.

After a lot of walking, and some more geocaches (all along the route), I stop at a supermarket for some shopping and am back to the hostel (again by Uber) to eat some easy dinner (pasta with tomato sauce) and some reading about what to do tomorrow.
